A New Year Begins

January 4th
Happy New Year!

This month we begin our multiplication unit in math. This will encompass multi-digit multiplication strategies.  The students will learn three methods of multiplication and they can then use whichever method they are most comfortable with.  I will send home practice sheets if your student does not know their basic math facts.  Please encourage them to practice these as it makes it much easier for them to solve larger problems when they have them mastered.

We are also in the midst of our informational text unit.  Students were introduced to Newsela.com yesterday. They may use this site for online reading as part of their weekly homework assignment.  They should be in the habit of completing the short (4 question) quiz that aligns with the news article so that they can check for understanding.  As usual they should review their answers to learn from any mistakes they might make.  Most students should choose articles in the 700 Lexile range (or the high 600’s) as this corresponds with a 4th grade reading level.  They can record this in CloudK12 by creating a book called “Newsela”.

It is great being back with the kids!
